Ship Modelling Society of Victoria Inc.
Promoting ship modelling of all types, periods and methods.
Established 1938
Registered No. A14703M
The Ship Modelling Society of Victoria Incorporated (SMSV) was established in Melbourne in 1938 to encourage, and to provide facilities for, the furtherance of the art of ship modelling.
We are primarily an association of people with an interest in ship modeling, in all its forms (plastic, wood, card, period or modern ships, and remote control). However, anyone with an interest in maritime art, photography or literature is welcome.
The Society provides an opportunity for members to mix and converse with those of a like mind and fosters the exchange of ideas, research and experience. We have an extensive library of books and plans that are available for the exclusive use of members. Our newsletter, “Slipway”, is promulgated quarterly and contains news and articles of interest to members.
Visitors are always welcome.
The Society meets at Port of Melbourne Corporation's Port Education Centre, 343 - 383 Lorimer Street, Port Melbourne (Melway Map 42 E10 - Bus Route 237), on the first Wednesday of each month except January. The site is easily accessed from the Westgate Freeway via the Todd Road ramps; please see map.
Meetings generally commence at 7:30 pm and we aim to complete the formal component of our general meetings within half an hour. The remainder of the evening is devoted to guest speakers, show and tell sessions, tutorials by members or work on a club project.
Our November meeting is traditionally given over to an exhibition of members models worked on during the year. A trophy is awarded to the model voted by members as the most popular on the night.
Our December meeting is a more social occasion and includes our annual Maritime / Nautical quiz. Members are encouraged to bring partners and spouses to share in the fun.
Visitors are always welcome to any of our general meetings.
